Company History

Edelmiro (Ed) Muñiz founded Muñiz Engineering, Inc. (now known as MEI Technologies) in 1992 to provide engineering and technical service contracting work to government entities and private sector businesses. With one full-time and one part-time employee at his side, he helped the company stand out from competition by focusing on high-quality, best-value, ethically based support.

After a few months, MEI Technologies landed its first client, SRS Technologies, to provide specialized engineering support for the Strategic Defense Initiative Organization. The SRS purchase order, along with a consulting subcontract from Eagle Aerospace, Inc. to support proposal preparation, led to modest revenue in MEI Technologies' inaugural year.

In late 1992, MEI Technologies teamed with other companies to pitch for business. In 1993, the company served as a subcontractor to Eagle Aerospace, Inc. team, which was selected by NASA to support the Program Office Support Services Effort contract. Later that year, the U.S. Air Force named MEI Technologies as prime contractor on the Shuttle Payload Support Contract.

In January 1995, MEI Technologies purchased all of the assets of Eagle Aerospace, which had been mentoring MEI Technologies since its launch. This acquisition tremendously boosted MEI Technologies' credibility in the marketplace. The employee base soared from approximately 15 to more than 65 team members and revenues skyrocketed from $30,000 in 1992 to $5 million in 1995. MEI Technologies was also named in the top 10 of Houston's Top 100 Fastest Growing Companies.

Over the next four years, MEI Technologies acquired new prime contracts and subcontracts, with a total revenue increase of 233%. In addition, the company grew to 250 employees and expanded throughout the United States, opening offices in Colorado and New Mexico.

Upon earning ISO 9001:2000 certification in 2001 (current certification is ISO 9001:2008), MEI Technologies continued to experience growth through the addition of high-profile contracts, including the $450-million Electrical Systems Engineering Services (ESES) contract at the NASA-Goddard Space Flight Center in 2004. That same year, it started forming joint ventures to offer customers even more dynamic products and services.

It was with this exponential growth that the company re-evaluated its services and processes. With process-oriented management, it redefined itself into the MEI Technologies we know it as today, a company with six focused capabilities: engineering services, IT/cyber security, payload integration, test and evaluation, advanced power systems and advanced communications.

Today, MEI Technologies employs over 700 people in six states with 2011 revenues exceeding $150 million. Serving government, commercial, and international sectors, MEI Technologies has recently been named one of the fastest-growing, private companies in the U.S. by Inc. Magazine, and continues to grow through organic growth, joint ventures and strategic investments.
