History of MEI
Edelmiro
(Ed) Muñiz
founded Muñiz Engineering, Inc. (MEI) in 1992 to provide
engineering and technical service contracting work to government
entities and private sector businesses. With one full-time
and one half-time employee at his side, he made MEI stand
out from the competition by focusing on high-quality, best-value,
ethically based support.
After a few months, MEI landed
its first client, SRS Technologies, to provide specialized
engineering support for the Strategic Defense Initiative Organization.
The SRS purchase order, along with a consulting subcontract
from Eagle Aerospace, Inc. to support proposal preparation,
led to modest revenue in MEI’s inaugural year.
In late 1992, MEI began teaming
with other companies to pitch for business. This strategic
move helped to reduce MEI’s risk of being perceived
as a start-up, minority-owned and managed firm. The strategy
paid off when NASA selected MEI as part of Eagle Aerospace’s
team on the Program Office Support Services Effort contract
in 1993. Later that year, the United States Air Force (USAF)
selected MEI for prime contractor on the Shuttle Payload Support
Contract.
In January 1995, MEI purchased
all of the assets of Eagle Aerospace Inc., a large, well-known
and respected company that had been mentoring MEI since its
launch. This acquisition tremendously boosted MEI’s
credibility in the marketplace. The employee based soared
from approximately 15 to more than 65 individuals. Revenues
increased from $30,000 in 1992 to $5 million in 1995. MEI
was also named in the top 10 of Houston’s Top 100 Fastest
Growing Companies.
Over the next four years, MEI
acquired new prime contracts and subcontracts, with a total
revenue increase of 233 percent. In addition, the company
grew to 250 employees and expanded throughout the United States,
opening offices in Colorado and New Mexico.
In 2001, MEI earned its ISO
9001:2000 certification, a tedious task of reviewing internal
policies, procedures and processes to ensure quality performance
with the adhering to the International Organizational Standards.
Since that time, the company has continued to experience growth
through the addition of high-profile contracts, including
the following in 2004-2005: the $450-million Electrical Systems
Engineering Services (ESES) contract at the NASA/Goddard Space
Flight Center; Engineering Services sub-contract with Jacobs
Sverdrup (ESC) at the NASA/Johnson Space Center. In 2006,
MEI added the a subcontract to Jacobs Sverdrup for NASA's
Test and Evaluation Contract (TEC), a subcontract to Lockheed
Martin for the Engineering Development and Sustainment 2006
program for Kirtland Air Force Base, and a subcontract to
CSC for the NASA Shared Services Contract (NSSC). The employee
base now stands at 750 individuals nationwide. Revenues have
skyrocketed from $18 million in 2000 to a projected $116 million
in 2007. Revenues for 2008 are projected at $121 million with
employees and offices in Alabama, California, Colorado, Georgia, Maryland,
Mississippi, New Mexico, Ohio, and Texas.
Because of its superior service
and extraordinary growth, MEI has garnered dozens of regional
