PRESIDENT:
Alfred A. (Sam) Boyd
Alfred A. (Sam) Boyd was named
President of MEI Technologies, Inc. (formerly Muñiz
Engineering, Inc.) (MEI) on 1 August, 2004. He is responsible for
the leadership and management of this $100M small business.
Before joining MEI, Mr. Boyd was Senior Vice President, Assurance
Engineering Operation of Science Applications International
Corporation (SAIC) from 1999 to 2004. As such, he was responsible
for executive level management of all contracts in the Houston
Operation, consisting of seven divisions, 600 employees, and
annual revenues of $55M.
Prior to 1999, Mr. Boyd was
SAIC’s 10-year $400M Safety, Reliability and Quality
Assurance contract program manager, and earlier he was an
engineering manager with Ford Aerospace, Loral, and Lockheed
Martin. During this time, he managed a department of 15 engineers
responsible for providing systems engineering support to the
NASA Level II Space Station Freedom program, and the Level
III project at the Johnson Space Center. Mr. Boyd began his
time at Ford Aerospace as a section manager, specialty engineering,
supporting the Shuttle Control Center’s hardware and
software development, in 1984 when he left the United States
Air Force and joined industry.
Mr. Boyd retired from the Air
Force at the rank of Colonel after completing a 21-year career
as a decorated combat pilot, engineering manager, and technology
developer. He began his career with the Air Force as a fighter
pilot, and served in a variety of engineering and operational
flying positions, culminating in the position of Commander,
Air Force Human Resources Laboratory at Brooks Air Force Base
in San Antonio, Texas. He commanded the 400 person laboratory,
which was spread across four states, while managing a $24M
annual budget.
Mr. Boyd received a Bachelor’s
in Basic Science from the US Air Force Academy and a Master
of Science degree in Aeromechanical Engineering while in the
Air Force. He serves on the board of directors of various
non-profit organizations in the local Houston area; is involved
in local, state and national quality professional organizations
and programs to maintain a role in evolution of quality management
trends and best practices; and is a member of the Joint Leadership
Team at NASA Johnson Space Center. He has also been a Malcolm
Baldrige National Quality Award examiner, and played a leadership
role in initiating and evolving the Texas Quality Award as
an examiner and Chairman of the Board of Overseers.
In June 2005, Mr. Boyd received
the NASA Public Service Medal at the NASA Honor Awards Ceremony
held at Johnson Space Center. This medal is one of NASA's
highest honors, and is given for exceptional contributions
to the NASA mission, to individuals who were not government
employees during the time they performed the service.
